HELLO from a Student Investor!

Hallo. Hey. Hi. Bonjour. Guten tag. Ahoj.

Angharad Owen

I’m Angharad. A brand new face/eyes/ears to property investing. I’m a 20-year old second year student studying the oboe at the Royal Northern College of Music. I know absolutely nothing about investing in property other than the little I have learnt from my parents over the years (they’re both landlords), and I vaguely know about the student housing market. Well, this is because I am a student and I know what we want/where we want to live. So if anyone has any questions whatsoever about students, please feel free to ask.

I’m also the Area Representative for Your Property Network magazine in Manchester. This means that my face is one which pops up at every property meeting in Manchester. (The MPM, PPN, PNC and PIN). So if you go to any of these meetings, please feel free to come and say hi. I’m usually hanging around in the back next to the table of magazines. I also find these meetings very daunting as:

  1. I know nothing
  2. I’m only 20
  3. Everyone else is older and knows what they’re talking about

I have only to a small number meetings so far and I am learning slowly. I’ve head Kevin Wright speak twice now (the same talk – as it happens) and I understood it a lot more the second time – although this may  have something to do with the fact that I went to the loo halfway through the talk the first time, and when I came back he was dressed as a ninja. Very odd. However, the second time round I understood it much more.

He spoke of a concept called bridging. To someone brand new to investing I had no idea what this was. Had to ring up my father and he had to explain. Even then, I don’t really understand it. From what I can gather it’s a form of short term loan, which is great cause it means you end up with less money tied up in the property and it then allows you to expand your portfolio quicker, but then again what about people like me?

I have no money to pay for my degree course, let alone have enough money to take out a short term loan and repay it so I can invest my money in property.

My favourite quote from this talk was this:

If you are not embarrassed by how low your offer is, it is not low enough

I think that can be applied to a lot of things in life, to be honest.
